3G Modems for mobile broadband access
The 3G modem is a device that allows users to connect to the internet via the 3G mobile network that is used for mobile phones. There are currently two types of 3G modem available and these are the data card, the USB modem stick which is also referred to as a 3G USB dongle. The 3G modem connects to the mobile network through a range of mobile broadband service providers like Vodafone, Orange, O2, and other similar companies. Update – since this piece was first published the USB modem or dongle is now the only widely available option in the UK, the data cards that were popular when mobile broadband first emerged as a consumer technology have been phased out. Whilst 4G is not yet available mobile network 3 have a special USB modem (dongle), for accessing HSPA+ broadband which some are calling 3.5G.
Getting your USB modem
One of the many things you will need to do when choosing which mobile broadband provider to use is to decide on the type of 3G modem you wish to use. You may find that some providers only offer certain types of 3G modem with their packages and modems like the PC Card modem are usually left out in favour of the more popular USB modem stick and USB dongle. The reason for these latter two modems being so popular is because of their compatibility with the computers they plug into. The PC Card modem will only fit into laptops and therefore limits is use with desktop systems.
How your mobile broadband modem works
Whichever 3G modem you decide on they will all work in the same way. Once you receive your 3G modem you will find in the box the modem you chose, a small SIM card like those found in mobile phones, and also various USB cables if you went for the USB dongle. The SIM card is fitted into the 3G modem and this is the part of the modem that allows you to access the 3G mobile network you are with. Once you plug your 3G modem in it will usually set up and install the necessary software to use the device from the data stored inside the 3G modem itself although some of them do come with an installation CD to allow you to install what you need. Once everything is loaded onto the computer all you need to do is click connect and you are ready to browse the internet.
Benefits of this technology
Accessing the internet using your 3G modem means that unlike using a modem through a fixed line you are not limited by your location. Once you have connected with your USB broadband modem you will be able to get online anywhere you can use a mobile phone. This means that if work or your lifestyle takes you around the country on a daily basis you will still get full internet access wherever you go. There are also benefits for users who are not mobile and are just simply by their location or the space they have available where they work or use their computer. With the way the 3G broadband modem works users who are unable to get broadband access where they are will be able to use this service because they connect through the mobile phone network. In addition, users who do not have the space for a router or the associated cabling will find that a 3G internet modem will work perfectly in their environment.
